A Pine Plains, NY, city official says a gunman has a high school head taken hostages, the Associated Press reports.Students are reported to be safe.
The Poughkeepsie Journal reports that Stissing Mountain High School on Lock Down.
The newpaper quotes one of the parents, Bob Lamont, said the shooter looks a parent to one of the two students in the building when the incident took place.
Update 10:29 ET: AP says gunman surrendered.
AP quoted an unknown official as saying that the shooter was a former pupil. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly, said militia gave approximately 10 ET.
Town Supervisor Gregg says powder shooter is a man in his 40s. He said that no shots were fired.
The school is about 90 miles north of New York City.
